Daisy’s Kitchen
Twins
Stephanie and Stacy leafed through an old photo book reminiscing their
childhood. “Do you remember our times in Grandma Daisy’s kitchen?” Stephanie
asked.
Stacy
pointed at a picture of her younger self proudly holding up a decorated snowman
cookie and laughed. “Do I ever. It seems like we were always fighting over what
was for lunch or what cookies we were going to make and somehow she diffused
the situation without either of us feeling left out. All I learned about
unconditional love came from her example.
Especially our times in her kitchen.”
Looking thoughtful Stephanie said,
“Hmm, I never thought of it that way. You
are totally right. Who knew that making
both peanut butter and sugar cookies at the same time would have that result?”
“She
obviously did. Don’t forget the macaroni
and cheese versus grilled cheese sandwiches wars.”
“How could I forget? Grandma Daisy certainly ate her share of my
favorite food to finish off the box,” Stephanie chuckled.
“What was her nickname for the two
of us again? Oh yeah, Day and
Night. I still wonder what she meant by
that but I think I am beginning to understand.” Stacy stopped her perusal of
the family album long enough to suggest calling Grandma Daisy.
Jumping up
to find the phone Stephanie exclaimed, “That is a great idea!”
“Good
morning Grandma. How are you this
morning?” Stacy cheerfully asked.
“I’m doing
well. Thank you for asking. How are you doing sweetie?” Daisy replied.
“We are
just fine. Stephanie and I are in my
apartment looking through old pictures.
We wanted to call you to ask a question.”
“Go ahead.
We will see if this old woman knows the answer.”
Without
delay Stephanie blurted out, “What do you mean by our nicknames Day and Night?”
“Oh. That’s
easy. You may look the same but your
personalities couldn’t be more different.”
“Like Day
and Night?” came the question from Stacy.
“Exactly. Like Day and Night. Both of those serve a
different purpose and have equal value in my eyes and the eyes of the good Lord
who created them. The same goes for my
beautiful granddaughters.”
